The Backus American Legion, Sons of the Legion and Auxiliary are sponsoring several events in conjunction with the community’s annual Corn Fest Aug. 12-14.
The post will kick off the weekend with a giant meat raffle at 5:30 p.m. Friday, 12. p.m. Five packages will be awarded each of 7 rounds for a $1 ticket.
Saturday, Aug. 13, there will be horseshoe and bean bag tournaments at 2 p.m. with 100 percent paybacks plus cash supplements for prizes. Sign-up for the tournaments begin at 1 pm. Horseshoe entries are $10 a person with drawings for partners. Bean bag entries are $10 for a two-person team.
The annual post reception for visiting veterans units participating in the Corn Fest Parade will begin at 2:15 pm, followed by a luncheon at 3:30 pm.
Saturday Legion events conclude with free customer and cash drawings at 9 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 14, the Frankie Lamb Band returns to the Legion from 2-6 p.m., playing classic country and pop, old time and swing. Featuring 29 prizes, the Auxiliary Corn Fest Raffle drawings will take place at 3 and 4 pm. Winners will be posted in the clubrooms and on the website
backuslegion.com. Tickets are available at the Legion and from Auxiliary members.
Also Sunday, the monthly Auxiliary breakfast will be served from 7:30-11:30 a.m. It includes a choice of French toast or pancakes, fried or scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, juice and coffee for $7 for adults and $4 for children under 7. Proceeds go toward active duty troop, veterans, community and other Auxiliary programs.
The main community Corn Fest events are on Saturday and include a parade at 2 p.m., followed by an all-you-can-eat corn feed at the Fire Hall at 4 p.m. featuring corn-on-the-cob and lots of fixings. There are kids games, a craft and vendor market, beer garden, street dance, fireworks at dusk and more.
